"Chopper Bikes" refer to a style of Cruiser bike that was first introduced to the US market in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The bike was designed to look like a chopper motorcycle; which typically featured long frames, low seats, larger rear tires and "ape hanger" handlebars. To reduce the weight of the bike- front fenders, crash bars and other parts were chopped off. This process was known as "chopping" and is where this style of bike got it's name. While some manufacturers sell off the shelf Choppers; a true "chopper" is designed to attract attention, and most are custom built to achieve that one-of-a-kind look.
