Qiviut refers to the soft under-hair of the Arctic Musk Ox. Musk Ox grow thick undercoats of soft brown fleece and thick overcoats of shaggy, long straight hair to protect themselves from the harsh Arctic winters. The under-hair is eight times warmer than traditional wool by weight and finer than cashmere making Qiviut one of the rarest natural luxury fibers in the world.   Qiviut is shed naturally each year during the spring months and collected to produce a yarn that is so fine that if you laid 1,950 of them side by side they would barely cover an inch. A little goes a long way- an entire scarf can be made from one ounce of yarn. The yarns can be dyed or hand painted to create some beautiful colors.
